Hello Dan,Working at my desk waiting for weather more likely to be en route to you part of the country, I thought you might enjoy this photo that I found yesterday.I was preparing a collection of MacNeilephemera/information etc. that I am sending to the MacNeil archives at the Poppenhusen Institute. It was included in a set of photos sent to me by the Frick Museum in NYC back when I was doing research. The picture was taken at the rear door of MacNeil’s studio in the fall of 1928 prior to the model being sent on to San Francisco for the NSS Palace of the Legion of Honor. A photo appeared in the Exhibition Catalogue. Prior to the event, (April-October 1929), over 1,200 pieces of sculpture were sent in seventeen railroad cars with all costs paid for by Archer Huntington who had put up $100,000 to do that. His wife Anna Hyatt Huntington showed seventeen pieces. MacNeil also exhibited his two-ton work Into the Unknown that is still used as the logo for the NSS.Jim

More about this marker. The 175 ton, 60 foot long Harrub Pilgrim Memorial was carved out of French granite by Herman Atkins MacNeil of New York. Charles Harrub, an engineer for the American Brass Company, donated the $100,000 needed for the project to honor his wife and the Pilgrims. Dedicated October 11, 1930 at its original location at the entrance to Chase Park across from the Freight Street bridge (about 1 mile away), it was moved for the construction of the Interstate Route 84 / Route 8 interchange and is now located at the corner of Highland Avenue and Chase Parkway.
