MacNeil’s likeness of General Washington guards the right flank of the Washington Arch in Greenwich Village

MacNeil’s statue of George Washington as “Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army” is unique.

The majority of Statues of Washington portray him as the first President.

Perhaps, Washington is the most memorialized of the founders.

George Washington was appointed the Commander-in-chief of the Continental Army on June 15th, 1775.

H. A. MacNeil’s “Washington at War” balances the east side of the Arch in Washington Square while Alexander Stirling Calder’s “Washington as President” graces the west side. Both sculptors studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and represent that art style.

Hermon MacNeil’s many sculptures and monuments have the Stars and Stripes nearby.

Placed on the Arch in 1916, it has been a favorite rally point for Parades, Protests, and Celebrations.
